Plot Summary
Sixty-eight-year-old Lorraine arrives at the scene of the accident that took Kris, a local high school girl who played on the same softball team as her granddaughter Reenie. The scene reminds Lorraine of her own loss, the death of her youngest daughter Sharee in an accident twenty-nine years ago. Lorraine's family members each respond differently to the incident. Sally, Lorraine's daughter, scolds her mother for always being in the middle of everything, even when it has nothing to do with her. Lorraine's husband Earl seems completely unaffected by the accident despite its similarity to their daughter's passing, but then again, Earl never talked about Sharee's death. Her granddaughter Reenie is of course shaken up, like her mother and the rest of the team. As for Lorraine, she sets her focus to coaching the rest of the softball team to victory at their upcoming tournament, despite their mourning of the loss of their friend. Lorraine's great-niece, also named Sharee after her late cousin, now lives in Kansas City, a little ways away from the rest of her family in Missouri. She has just taken leave from work, now that her second attempt at IVF was determined successful, and her pregnancy has finally been confirmed by ultrasound. There are now four viable embryos in her uterus, making Sharee almost too fertile, the opposite of the problem she has had for the past few years, and she and her husband must now decide if they will terminate any of the fetuses before she reaches the end of the first trimester. Sharee gets a call from her mother telling her about the recent accident and asking if she will visit her great aunt, who will be nearby at the softball tournament. Sharee typically avoids her extended family, particularly Lorraine who, a few days after her daughter's death, tried to legally change the one-month-old Sharee's name. Lorraine attends Kris's funeral and sits with the softball team, who have all gotten matching heart tattoos for Kris on their thighs, the subject of the town's most recent gossip. At the funeral, the softball team makes a scene as they sing a song by the Donnas, Kris's favorite band, in front of their friend's open casket. A few days later, Sharee awaits Lorraine's visit, which was planned for 11 am after the tournament but keeps getting pushed back as the girls win more and more games. Sharee has been sick and throwing up all day, and though her husband begs her to cancel, she decides to tough it out and takes a nap while she waits. Sharee has a dream that she sees the face of her dead cousin and namesake. At the tournament, Lorraine is telling the team's parents about her daughter's death, the day the two got into a terrible fight, causing Sharee to leave in her father's pickup truck for the drive that ended up killing her. The story is supposed to help convince the parents to let Lorraine drive the girls to Kansas City, but before long Sally approaches, telling her mother that the story is disturbing the team.
