Plot Summary
A man is with his wife, Emily, in the supermarket. She walks through the aisles joyfully, looks at the spices, and wishes she could be the god of the little, wonderful things in life. As they go to check out, a boy with a gun enters the market. The man makes a noise, and draws the boy's attention to Emily. He shoots her, and she dies. After Emily's funeral, her husband struggles to recuperate. One day, he sees a vision of a woman in his kitchen. He fears that he is losing his mind. Another day, he sees a woman hanging from his ceiling. A third ghost, a man, offers to bring Emily back to life if the man will kill himself. Before this transaction can be made, the ghost of grief appears, and claims that the male ghost is a liar. She explains that nothing will bring back Emily, so the husband must learn to live. This last ghost nurses him back to health, and helps him regain his interest in life once more. As he becomes more independent, she disappears, which leaves him capable again. He goes to the beach one day and observes the sailboats, which Emily never got the chance to love, and he spots a final ghost: that of joy. He knows he has healed and that he can move on.
