In the present, a brother and sister are at the house of one of her friends, but they have to hide because her friend's dogs are violent and snapping at them. They hide in the pantry, and the sister feels guilty because she brought her brother into this, and he has not recovered from his head injury yet. She reflects on how deeply their sibling dynamic has changed now that her brother can no longer do many of the things he used to and now that she has to care for him. They resolve to escape from the dogs, but the sister has forgotten the safe word to subdue the dogs. The brother tries to grab the kitchen phone, as both don't have phones on them, but is unsuccessful. The sister reveals that she was lying earlier, and that she has really just broken into her friend's house to steal back a compromising tape of their affair. The siblings search for the tape, and the brother encounters a girl hiding under her blankets. The girl tells him the safe word for the dogs and tells him that she called the police. He subdues the dogs and goes downstairs, and the siblings leave with the friend's camera and tapes. They watch them when they're back at home, and the brother mourns the old him.
