Plot Summary
Bayo and Tosin are brothers - Bayo came to the city much before Tosin did, and it was only later that their family sent Tosin out of Ilesha to join his elder brother. On the day that Tosin arrived, there was a heavy attack, which led to the formation of 'The Pit' - which was quickly taken over by gangs and criminals. Bayo joined forces with Conrad to set up the hierarchy of these gangs, forming groups and deciding territories, but then Bayo betrayed Conrad and shot him in the back for control of the operation. The rest of the gang accepted Bayo as their leader, but privately they renamed the site of the betrayal 'Gethsemane,' which was where Judas betrayed Jesus. Bayo's group carries out courier services, but one of their packages gets stashed in the territory of another group after a surprise police patrol. The established protocol between gangs states that a civilian must go in to retrieve the package, and so Bayo volunteers Tosin. It is supposed to be easy: in and out as quick as possible. Tosin goes to spot, but the gang in that area points weapons at him and kidnaps him. Despite this, he does not feel like he is in danger: the leader, Vendra, takes him to their headquarters and shows him the bodies of four of her girls who came into contact with the package he was supposed to retrieve. They are covered in infected rashes, and one of them has already perished. Vendra demands to know exactly what Bayo is transporting, but Tosin does not know. As a scholar, however, he is interested in getting to the bottom of this - so he and Vendra go to Mr. Adam, the client who ordered the package. Bayo is waiting at Gethsemane to hear from Tosin, but there is writing on that wall that begins to terrify him - "PESTILENCE" and "SACRIFICE" written in blood that remind him of how he betrayed Conrad in this very room. Elsewhere, Mr. Adam reveals to Tosin and Vendra that he and a few intellectuals from outside The Pit have developed a virus to exterminate The Pit, which is actually a living organism. This virus is called Sopana-40, and Mr. Adam informs Vendra that the infected girls are not going to survive. Tosin, overcome with curiosity, goes into The Pit out of a desire to merge his mind with it. Bayo receives a message from Tosin in Gethsemane, in blood on the walls, saying that The Pit is really alive, and then he appears in a projection informing his brother that he made the choice to join it. Bayo accepts the loss of his brother after failing to convince him to change his mind, and travels back to Ilesha to tell his family the sad news about Tosin's loss.
