Plot Summary
As Floyd Beefus picks a tick off one of his dogs, the gas man slips on a plate and falls down the stairs before exclaiming that he has broken his leg. The gas man tells Floyd he needs an ambulance, but Floyd says that he does not own a phone and asks the gas man if he wants an aspirin or a soda. Upset, the gas man again requests for Floyd to use a neighbor’s phone to call a doctor, but Floyd says that the nearest neighbor is two miles away and he can’t drive because of a DWI. The gas man insists that this is a crisis and he could be bleeding internally, and Floyd says he still can’t leave his wife Frieda, who is upstairs and sick in bed. Floyd mentions that his wife’s visiting nurse should arrive in about three hours and she should be able to help. The gas man finally accepts the offer of aspirin. Floyd begins to ask the gas man about his personal life and learns that the gas man has a wife and two kids. Floyd asks whether the gas man likes his wife, how he would feel if she suddenly left or died, and whether they sleep together. Annoyed, the gas man questions why Floyd is asking him these things. Floyd says that he and his wife can’t sleep in the same bed anymore because of her condition and he feels lonely sleeping by himself. The gas man requests a pillow, and Floyd continues to ask questions, such as whether the gas man has ever been unfaithful to his wife. The gas man is shocked by the question and tells Floyd that his affairs are none of his business. Floyd shares a story about a woman he cheated on his wife with at a poultry fair, and the gas man asks why Floyd is telling him this story. The gas man says he doesn’t want to talk and only wants to get out. Floyd asks the gas man if he believes that bad things happen to him because of something bad he’s done in the past. Floyd continues to talk about his guilt about having cheated on his wife, and the gas man says that he doesn’t care and only wants a doctor. When the gas man sees that Floyd has become upset, he apologizes for hurting his feelings and for the fact that his wife is dying, but he can’t do anything. The two men take shots of whiskey. Floyd asks the gas man about his job and asks if any women have ever tried to make a move on him. The gas man says there was once a divorced woman in her bathrobe who would offer him coffee and ask if he wanted to sit and spend time with her. Every month, she would wait for him to visit and would sometimes ask if he liked to dance. One month, she tries to get him to sleep with her, but the gas man yells at her to get out of the way. The gas man says that the next month, the woman is no longer there and a neighbor says she committed suicide. Floyd says the gas man could’ve kept her alive, and if it were him, he would’ve danced with her. Floyd says that the gas man killed her, and that’s why he has broken his leg now. That night, Floyd tells Billy about the gas man and how he yelled at Floyd as the rescue squad carried him away. Billy responds that the gas man must have been very impolite, to yell at Floyd despite him taking care of him and feeding him.
