Jane considers herself a loner, and is unable to engage in the normal human social interactions of day to day life. She is mostly able to keep to herself, until her job asks her to set some goals and engage more socially with the rest of the workplace. Though she doesn't want to, Jane attends her colleague Nick's art show, where her singular art history college class comes in handy after Nick asks her about her opinion of the show.
A week or so after the show, Nick asks Jane to sit for his new art project. Though apprehensive, Jane is inexorably compelled to go along, and she ends up at his apartment, feeling desperately uncomfortable with all this attention from other people after so long in the shadows. Yet, at the same time, she seems to enjoy being seen for once.
Throughout all of this, Jane creepily stares at and obsesses over a beautiful young girl whose apartment she can see right into across the alleyway from her own. Jane watches the girl and fantasizes about what kind of person she is. She even follows her home from the park one day after she sees her from afar. One day, the girl across the way makes eye contact with Jane and waves.
