Plot Summary
While visiting his father in prison, John learns that he's planning on moving back in with them upon release. The next day, John and his brother Daniel hit the road for Montana. They stop at a diner and read the local obituaries. That afternoon, they steal furniture from one of the homes listed during their funeral. As they head West, they continue with this plan, only one day, the funeral goers return early and they're spotted leaving out the back door. A woman invites them inside, asking if they knew Gary from the youth center. They say yes and stay for cake. Daniel needs to get out of there, and as he walks down the hallway, he sees a girl who introduces herself as Gwen. She asks him to drive her somewhere and she gets in the car. When John comes out of the house, he immediately says she can't come. Gwen figures out they were robbing the house and insists she'll tell on them if they don't let her come. Regardless, John kicks Gwen out of the car and the brothers drive away. They make it to the next town and try to sell some rings at a pawn shop. Suspecting they're stolen, the pawn shop owner tells them to beat it before he calls the cops. Daniel and John split up, but when John gets back to the car he finds Gwen sitting on the hood. John is twitchy about the cops in town so concedes this fight. Gwen and Daniel get in the backseat. That night Gwen and Daniel have sex, but by morning Gwen realizes they've been driving in circles. John decides to rob a house and Daniel plays lookout, only when John hears the two honks it's too late. John slides under the bed and a woman walks into the room. She sits down and sobs on and off all night. John wakes up under the bed, and sneaks out while the woman sleeps. John finds Gwen and Daniel in a cafe and after his bizarre night, he decides it's time to stop running and to kill his father. He walks in the house and finds his father on the couch. His father reaches for his gun but is too weak to hold it. John grabs the gun, but doesn't shoot him. Instead, he walks outside and waves Gwen and Daniel on their way. John goes back inside to see his father off.
