Plot Summary
A thirteen-year-old boy and his family take a holiday trip, renting a house close to an unnamed village. It is finally sunny on the last day of the trip after a week full of rain, so the family visits the hill that overlooks the town. As they walk uphill, the boy reflects on the strain of his parents' marriage. His father had a great career but never got the promotions he wanted. He quit and attempted to start his own business, which failed. When he finally got a new job, it was similar to his old one but paid considerably less money. His mother supported his father at first but eventually stopped over time, and their marriage deteriorated. The boy remembers small and vague events, like his dad getting fired. He wonders why they still went on a holiday trip when they should have been saving money. The boy imagines that if he gets to the top of the hill, everything will be alright. His dad tells him that his mom isn’t feeling well, so they decide to instead have their picnic where they are before reaching the summit. As the father unpacks the picnic items, he tells the boy that his mother stepped away to the old mine nearby. The boy goes to find her and sees her lying unconscious on the floor inside the cave. As he shouts for his dad, he realizes his mom’s body is covered by the same plastic sheet his father set up the picnic with. His dad arrives and attempts to kill the boy, but he dodges and escapes. It begins to rain, and the boy hazily remembers sitting against a tree as it pours violently and eventually stops. The following morning, a farmer stumbles on the boy, half-dead from hypothermia. The boy tells the farmer and then the police his story. The boy now believes his father wanted to start a new life by successfully erasing evidence of his old one. The boy's aunt ends up being his caretaker, and he is supported financially by his grandmother. For years, he thinks his father will come back to finally kill him. Eventually, human remains are discovered in the same holiday town his family stayed in. Through a DNA test, it is confirmed to be the boy's father, now assumed to have committed suicide within 48 hours of the murder. In the present moment, the boy, now a man, sits at a cafe overlooking that same seaside town from the holiday. He wants to complete the walking trip to the summit he never did and enjoy its beautiful view.
