Plot Summary
After sleeping for several years, a woman wakes up to her husband kissing and touching her. He has ripped her stockings. After being silent for so long, she tries to speak again by twisting her mouth and working at words. As she begins to speak, he squints as if imagining her sleeping and silent. His expressions become contemptuous as he continues to take advantage of her. The story of their love is rejoiced by all who hear it, despite the woman’s suffering and lack of consent. As the sexual abuse continues, the woman struggles to maintain the ability to speak. The weight of the situation and the man himself has the woman struggling for words. She then thinks of her father’s kingdom and how it is probably abandoned and full of cobwebs. Her throat becomes dry. Silence is all she can manage now. As her husband continues taking advantage of her, she can only think of roses.
