Plot Summary
Adan is a middle-aged Filipino American man who lives with his wife, Jana, and his children. His old neighbor, Dakila, messages him one day, prompting him to remember childhood events that he’d long ago repressed. He loved next to Dakila in Oakland, California, when he was still a boy. She had a grandmother who was haunted by a ghost, which Adan and his siblings called the Black Thing. One night, Adan was playing with his brother and sister when he punched a hole in the wall. As he sat in his bed in the dark, the Black Thing came to Adan and promised to haunt him after Dakila’s grandmother died. In the present, Dakila reveals that the reason she’s contacted Adan is that her grandmother recently died; she remembered what the ghost had said to him as a child and wanted to check on him. Adan thanks Dakila for her concern and promises that he is fine, but as he moves away from the computer, he senses his own fear. He hears noises in his house and so he tries to go to bed, but he wonders if the day has come for his haunting to begin.
