Jared, a fifth-grade boy, explores the woods on his first day of winter break because he doesn't like being with his parents. He pretends he's hiking with his crush, Lyndee, who in reality doesn't like him. When Jared finds a plane crash site with two dead bodies, he sits in the back and enjoys the quiet. He discovers that the dead man has a watch and that Jared has been at the crash for much longer than he thought, so he takes the woman's ring and leaves, hoping to give the ring to Lyndee. When he gets home, his parents are making a Christmas tree out of beer cans, and his dad takes the ring to find out if the diamond is real. His dad returns with cereal and a mountain bike for Jared, and lots of drugs. Jared's parents get high and when they run out of drugs, Jared's mom gets sick. His dad says they don't have any money left to get more drugs, but he refuses to sell the mountain bike. Worried, Jared goes back to the plane and takes the man's watch. His parents are excited and they both leave immediately, and Jared goes back to the plane crash in the snow. He pretends to fix the plane, and then gets inside. He stays there until he gets cold, and then feels that he isn't cold anymore, and since everything is white he thinks that they've taken off and are inside a cloud.
