Plot Summary
Thanks to a deep space travel technology that induces cold sleep, the suspension of a human form in time, Godfrey is nearly six hundred years old but has hardly lived past thirty. He works as the Hell Cop of the colony Betty on distant planet Cygnus, maintaining order and fending off Cyg's monstrous aliens with hundreds of "eyes" - high tech drones that help him survey the colony. Secretly in love with Betty's Mayor but trapped by the marriage and grief he fled across five centuries to escape, Godfrey would rather watch from a distance than involve himself in current affairs. When his eyes detect one of Cyg's infamous storms, the colony hardly bats an eye. Godfrey visits the library and reads his version of the news, archival texts from centuries past that inform him of the events he missed in times he once inhabited. The rain continues and floodwaters begin to rise dangerously, sweeping away houses and driving Cyg's vicious aliens from their forest habitats to terrorize the town. Driven together by catastrophe, Godfrey and the Mayor scramble to save townsfolk and fend off attacking aliens. But they can't prevent the looting and murder their own citizens engage in. Even Godfrey's coworker, the colony's other Hell Cop, absconds with his lover after looting nearby shops, stealing a flyer, and holding Godfrey at gunpoint. In the midst of the chaos, Godfrey and the Mayor find a moment of peaceful companionship. He confesses his love for her and explains how the death of his first wife has haunted him across the centuries and his many years of space travel failed to distance him from his own grief. The Mayor describes her own lost spouse, and Godfrey promises to stay in this timeline - for her sake. The rains stop, and the colony begins to rebuild from its muddy destruction. However, the spirit the floods inspired doesn't depart so quickly. A man strikes the Mayor over the head and steals her wallet. Godfrey attempts to save her, but she dies only a few hours later from the grievous wound. Lost in confusion and sorrow, he once again runs from his pain and decides to seek another era, another planet, to rebuild himself anew.
