Plot Summary
This story is told nonlinearly. Scenes of Bekka and Joakem's sunny romance are interspliced with sharply contrasted scenes of their slow deaths. Bekka, a witch's apprentice, is on her way to pick pixies for her master, the "wicker witch." She bumps into her crush, Joakem, a sweet but mischievous boy, who begs to accompany her. They are aged fourteen and fifteen, respectively. Bekka begrudgingly agrees, although she knows that the witch wouldn't approve. Joakem ignores the witch's runes decreeing that "common folk" stay out of the pixie orchard, and he enters despite Bekka's admonishments. While they are in the pixie orchard, Joakem asks Bekka to an upcoming dance. Though she wants to accept, Bekka declines, thinking that the witch would disapprove. Hurt, Joakem runs into a different part of the pixie orchard that's also marked as unsafe by witch's runes--it's where dead, toxic pixies lay dormant. They wake up and begin chasing after Joakem and Bekka. They sting Joakem to death and nearly kill Bekka. In her dying moments, lying in the mud, Bekka uses her last bits of strength to enact a spell that can reverse time. This spell comes at a great cost--the spell caster loses one year of life for every minute reversed. However, Bekka makes the sacrifice. She returns to the moment Joakem asks her to dance. Instead of declining this time, she says yes. Instead of running away, he kisses her in the sunlight, and the story comes to a close.
