Plot Summary
Sailing on their way to a drug deal, Irishman Blessington and Frenchman Freycinet travel from St. Vincent to Martinique in the Caribbean. They are accompanied by their respective “designated girlfriends”, Marie and Gillian. Blessington’s goal is to get the money from the deal and head to America on his student Visa and fulfill his dream of opening a restaurant on the Florida Keys. Drunk and high, Gillian makes crude comments like her usual daring self and Freycinet tells Blessington that he does not trust her. Blessington thinks that she is “alright.” When Marie falls seasick, Freycinet decides to stop the ship for a moment and anchor under the shadow of the Pitons, two mountain peaks that means “stakes” in French. After a moment where Freyincet almost goes overboard and Blessington saves him, the crew finally anchors along a coast. In the distance, Gillian observes another ship coming towards them. Two islanders get off the other boat claiming that Blessington and his crew must pay to anchor on this shore. Luckily, Freycinet scares them off with a sniper rifle. The islanders steer their boat away in an escape and Blessington, Freycinet, Marie, and Gillian all go for a swim in the water. In dismay, however, Gillian points out that they forgot to put down their ladder to go back up the ship. While the crew struggles to climb back aboard the ship, Blessington realizes that the islanders had cut the ropes of the ship, allowing it to drift away. The four try to catch up with the drifting boat but fail miserably and the stoned Gillian struggles against the cold water until she drowns. Blessington looks away as he cannot help her and fights the current with his own fatigue settling in. He finally makes it to Gros Piton, one of the mountain peaks. Barely alive on the island, Blessington hears strange noises and imagines that he is on his way to a cozy Irish bar in his delirium.
