A man who was a jealous husband in his past life now inhabits the body of an Amazon parrot. He returns to his home when his wife buys him from a pet store. He learns words like, "Hello," "Pretty bird," "Bad bird," and "Open up," based on what his former wife says. Now single, the parrot's former wife brings home several different men. From his cage in the den, the parrot cannot see but he hears them having sex. The parrot reflects on how jealous, obsessive, and insecure he was as her husband.
One day, the former wife comes out into the den, naked, and the parrot tries to communicate with her using his limited vocabulary. He realizes that she will never understand what he is trying to say: that he still loves her and that he is sorry. The wife returns to the bedroom with a man, and the parrot decides he will throw himself against the cage, again and again, in an effort to be freed into the blue sky outside.
