Plot Summary
Inside a medium-security prison, Steve Pine impresses his younger fellow inmates with stories of his robberies. He talks about how when he'd gone to court for his crime he'd accepted an Alford guilty plea for a jewelry store heist. When Pine gets out of prison, his former cellmate Tommy calls him and tells him about a burgling opportunity in the Mall of America. Pine tells Tommy this is too risky, but meets him at a bar to plan the heist. When Tom is jailed for another crime, he tracks down Tom's accomplice, Bob.
Pine grows to dislike Bob as they plan their heist together, and one day when Bob jokes around, Pine punches him and tells him to get serious. Pine is nervous because if they get caught he’s going to jail for the rest of his life. The day of the burglary, Bob is unprepared and nervous. They dress as security guards and knock out a guard who is checking badges for authenticity. They take down the rest of the guards and begin to transfer money from canvas bags to their garbage bags when, suddenly, Pine comes face to face with the barrel of a gun. The woman firing the gun misses and he kills her and the rest of the knocked-out guards before driving away.
Later in his motel room, Pine wonders why he never uses his brain for good and regrets killing for the first time. He decides to move into a small trailer park and he deposits some of the money in the bank and sends some to his sister. When he returns to his trailer, the moving company has come and taken away the abandoned car he hid the rest of the money in and he follows the tow truck to a storage unit and finds the money has been stolen.
He wades in the water of the marina and raises a barrel to his temple. Suddenly, he hears a noise behind him and turns to see a white-tailed deer staring at him. He lowers the gun and returns to the park where he plans to talk with the manager again and see if he has any more information on the tow truck company’s operations.
