Lorraine is the new bookkeeper at Good Earth Grocery, a new grocery store that is being built under the inspection of a man named Winston. Winston is the middle son of his mother Mildred, who passed away from heart problems when all three of her sons were very young. After their mother passed, Melvin, the oldest brother, abandoned the family and claimed that they all had to fend for themselves. This left Winston in charge of his younger brother Thurston.
Lorraine has feelings for Winston, and he has no idea. However, Thurston, Winston's younger brother who lives in a facility for those who suffer from mental illness, has a clear affinity for Lorraine himself. Lorraine grows very close to both men once Thurston begins to work part-time at Good Earth Grocery as well. This is her way of deepening her connection to Winston.
However, Winston tragically falls while inspecting an elevator and ends up in a coma. Suddenly Thurston loses, temporarily or permanently, his sole caregiver. Lorraine steps in to care for Thurston when Melvin once again refuses to help. She transports Thurston to and from work and spends many weekends with him. Lorraine lives in the constant sorrow of never knowing if the man she loves will wake up.
