Plot Summary
Eris, a young woman with prosthetic arms, is one of the best cab drivers in a futuristic city. After Arno Schorr, one of the founders of a doomsday cult called The Church of the Green Man, takes Eris's cab through the City, Eris is questioned by the Operative City Intelligence (OCI) and eventually recruited to help take down the cult, which believes the last remaining humans in this post-apocalyptic world are viruses that need to be eradicated. In exchange for her work, Eris is promised new replacement parts for her prosthetic arms, which she hasn't been able to afford for a while. The OCI uses a technology called brainshare, which gives agent Kit access to control Eris's central nervous system—though not her thoughts and memories. In the final showdown with Schorr and the Green Man, Eris and Kit get momentarily disconnected from the brainshare. Eris is able to fend off Schorr and the Green Man during a cab crash and physical fight while Kit comes to the rescue with a sniper rifle, killing the cult members. Reminded of her own strength, Eris decides to set out on a quest to look for her father, who has been missing since the City overtook the colonies. She is determined to return to her roots—with or without her replacement arms.
