Plot Summary
Toby and his sister, Amy, run towards the dunes of the beach with their dog, Tyre. Their parents trail behind, and as they get to the top of the dune, they see that another family has taken the spot where they normally sit. The kids recognize the family as the neighbors who live down the street from them. Amy says that the mom is a witch. The neighbor father is lying silently in a heap on the sand. Toby and Amy's mother tells the children to find another spot. They see that the neighbor kids are all dirty and have littered the beach with their junk. Toby runs to his parents to tell them that they have lost their spot, and he overhears his mother say that Amy is not her daughter. His parents tell him to find another spot, so he takes Tyre across a different dune. Tyre trails behind Toby as he finally finds a restful spot on the beach. One of the neighbor boys finds Toby and asks him what he is doing. Tyre approaches and seems sick, so Toby goes to see if his parents are coming, but he can’t see them. He gives the little boy a lollipop and asks him if he has any water. The little boy says yes and leads him back to the neighbor family’s setup. The mother and the rest of the kids are gone, but the father still lies motionless in the sand, surrounded by a maze of sandcastles. The little boy gives Tyre some water. Toby takes Tyre back to their new spot and leaves the dog to go and find his family. Toby wanders all along the beach and back to the parking lot to try and find his sister and parents, but he is unsuccessful. He overhears some other beachgoers say that someone has been arrested, and he thinks it may have been his parents. He returns to Tyre and then finds the neighbor mother with all of her children. She says she knows where Amy is and will take Toby to her. She ushers him along and speaks about how much she hates his father. Toby is confused and is suddenly forced into their camper van with Tyre. The door is locked behind him. He tries to escape but can’t; he finds an album of photos of his family in the camper van. He ends up falling asleep and wakes when he hears the door open. He leaves with Tyre and sees that the kids are all trying to get into the camper van. Amy and the neighbor parents are in the cabin of the car. He watches as they drive away and the little boy to whom he gave a lollipop waves goodbye to him from the van. It begins to get dark. Toby looks again for his parents and sees that the maze of sandcastles that the neighbor family had made is actually the street plan of their neighborhood. Toby finds his mother and tells her that the neighbors have kidnapped Amy and that he can’t find his father. The mother seems confused, saying that he doesn’t have a sister and that his dad is dead. Toby seems disoriented, but then he feels the memory of his sister and his dad slipping away.
