Plot Summary
A woman wakes up and realizes that she can't move and is in a dream. She knows that she is sick and has trouble waking up. Suddenly she sees an apartment and a boy and girl enter. The girl is around 22-years-old and the boy is slightly older. They observe the apartment and the different features of it, trying to determine if they want to move in. As they stand on the balcony, observing the view, they see letters engraved into the cement that say "Gayla." The woman watching realizes that they can't see her, but that her name is Gayla. The two leave the apartment and the invisible woman introduces herself as Gayla Damon. The couple includes a woman named Al, short for Alice, and Lowen. Gayla realizes that she is dead and is now a ghost.
Al and Lowen move into the apartment and Gayla wonders why she is still in her apartment. She observes all of the decorations that the couple put up into their apartment. Gayla tries to touch the objects of the apartment, but realizes that it costs her energy. Gayla remembers that she is 33-years-old and recalls her appearance. She begins to follow Lowen around the house, especially when he smokes. She hopes that Lowen can feel or hear her. Lowen is a 24-year-old man who is very kind and awkward. Gayla has a soft spot for him and wishes she could touch him.
Gayla begins to notice the differences between the couple and she assumes it is based on their upbringing. Al is very proper while Lowen seems to slouch a lot more. Gayla becomes very jealous of Al and how Al is able to touch Lowen. Gayla soon remembers that she was once an actress and that she had two lovers in her lifetime. The first was a man named Bill Wrenn who was a director. She thought he was perfect, but also too perfect. Then she fell in love with a bisexual man named Nick Charreau who broke her heart. She and Bill also had a fight and they broke up.
Gayla watches Al and Lowen make love and notices the pattern and routine in it. One time, after Al goes to sleep, Gayla join Lowen in the shower and Lowen seems to notice someone is there.
Gayla remembers her childhood and how eager she was to lose her virginity. After, she realized she felt a lot of guilt from it and changed her name from Gail to Gayla. She was able to become an actress and make her mother and brother proud. She thinks about her childhood, her acting life, and her lovers--something she does when Lowen isn't there.
One night, Gayla wonders if she can somehow possess Al so she can touch Lowen. She tries several nights in a row, finding it difficult at first but eventually doing so. At first, she is able to touch Lowen, but then Al takes over and explains that something is possessing her. Lowen confesses that he has also felt a presence of a woman here and the couple feels the need to move out of the apartment.
The couple go to the landlord and ask if anyone has died in their apartment. The landlord--Hirajian explains that an actress named Gayla Damon lived there and died of suicide. Hirajian explains that Gayla is there and she is angry. Al tells her to go away, but Lowen seems to listen in.
Gayla remembers her past and when she decided not to act in a role, she left Bill and her friends to go home only to find Nick with another person. Frustrated, Nick tells her that he's going to leave even though he just moved in. As a result, Gayla drinks a lot and falls off of a railing of her balcony.
Gayla shouts for Lowen and he hears her. They spend some time talking and he talks about how he loved her when he was younger. He begs her not to cause Al pain and eventually he sees her. They both confess their love and eventually Al walks back in. Lowen tells her that the ghost has disappeared and that no one will take their home away from then. Gayla is content with the ending of her life and found peace in Lowen and Al's story.
