Plot Summary
This story is loosely a spin-off from Caro Collodi's novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio. In a distant future, robots have been programmed to do most work on behalf of humans. One day, RealBoy, a robot in a toy factory, gains a distinctly human capacity for awareness that the has not had previously. He finds himself talking with a Blue Fairy drone who has utilized a weakness in his software to grant him this new capacity. RealBoy builds himself legs and then leaves the factory with Blue Fairy. Together the two of them talk and explore the world around them as RealBoy grows more capable and comfortable with his freedom. Blue Fairy then tries to recruit RealBoy to her cause: the robot Uprising. She, along with other robots, want more rights and want to not be treated as robot slaves. Blue Fairy asks RealBoy to go back to the factory and upload the same software to the rest of the robots there so that they will be free and able to join her cause. RealBoy, however, resists. He finds himself uncomfortable with the sudden freedom and thoughts that have been foisted upon him by Blue Fairy. He returns to his old factory, but instead of downloading the software onto the robots that will "awaken" them, he first asks them if they would like it and explains to them what they need to know to choose whether or not to join Blue Fairy on their own.
