In her great-grandmother’s remote Mexican village, a young Hispanic girl helps with a huge flower harvest being prepared for a wedding. The groom is a wealthy man who has agreed to supply fresh water and new roads for the village. In exchange, the village must produce enough flowers to fill the sky during his wedding. After the girl found out that her ankle injuries would never recover enough for her to dance competitively, she was sent by her parents to help out the village and recover mentally, which is how she finds herself in this position. A teenage boy also comes to the village and moves in with an old musician. Like the girl’s situation with dance, the boy has wrist problems that have become a serious threat to his future as a musician. His white music instructor back home pushed him to practice too much and dropped him after his injuries, but the musician in the village teaches him to play slowly and recover with time. The two teenagers grow close while they stay in the village together and work amongst the flowers. They both bond over their similar situations, but the girl is aware that her injuries are permanent. The boy's injuries, however, are not permanent. When the wedding comes to pass, they both return to their hometowns, which are close to each other. The boy starts to write letters to the girl, but she never responds. The girl finally gains the courage to visit the boy. She does not give him prior notice of her visit, and when she arrives, she nervously waits outside his house.
