In the 1970s, Sonny is a man living with a man he calls Uncle Teddy and a woman he calls Mother. Despite being in his 50s, Sonny does not know how to read or write. He acts like a child. Uncle Teddy teaches him how to read and write, despite Mother’s warnings. A few years later, Sonny sees a woman in the corridors of the mansion he lives in; the woman looks familiar, but he cannot place her.
As the years go by, Mother disappears. Everyone insists she is on vacation. One night, Sonny sits with Uncle Teddy to look at old photographs. To his alarm, Teddy starts crying, asking for forgiveness. He alludes to Sonny having had a wife, the woman he saw in the corridors, and a family, but having been hidden from all of them. Sonny doesn’t understand what Teddy’s getting at.
Later, Teddy disappears as well. Sonny only interacts with the doctor. He remains childlike, despite 40 years having passed. He plans on asking the doctor for more information on his old wife. In the absence of Teddy and Mother, all he wants is to feel less alone.
