Only twelve years old, Isabeau marries a wealthy Comte and moves into his castle. As the Comte is, for the most part, off serving the King, Isabeau is left to herself. She befriends' the Comte's son, Jerome, who is from his previous marriage and only one year older than her. Jerome very nearly died in the previous plague and is expected to die as soon as one comes again. But together they wander the castle and spend their days in each other's company.
As Isabeau becomes more acquainted with her home, she learns that there is a mystery surrounding the tower in the center of the castle: the donjon. There are many different local legends surrounding its magic and danger, but one thing is clear: do not enter it ones the stars are shining.
One day, Isabeau and Jerome receive news that there is another plague spreading through the country and that they are to have to wait even longer for the Comte's return. Jerome is distraught in the face of the death he soon expects to great him and runs off to the donjon despite the encroaching night. Isabeau chases after him, but it is too late. Night has fallen and they are both in the donjon.
As Jerome is no where to be found, it is now up to Isabeau to save both him and herself from the beast and other horrors lurking in the donjon. After a near miss, she wins her safety as well as Jerome's from a card game with she plays with three mysterious queens.
