Plot Summary
Ettie Savage is a Jewish woman who lives with her husband, Ed, in a suburban home. Ettie has her friend, Trudy, lead the charge on her home renovation. Ettie doesn’t see anything wrong with her house, but Trudy insists that there is a lot to be changed, so she calls over an interior designer, Robert Keneally, and leads him through Ettie’s house, suggesting what should be changed. Trudy talks Robert’s ear off with ideas, while he admires the subtle touches of the house, such as the original de Kooning paintings. Finally, the tour ends and Ettie’s left alone in her house, not too bothered by her friend’s overenthusiasm nor the general air of unhappiness surrounding her marriage. Alone, she plays a piece by Chopin on the piano and fills the air of the otherwise somber afternoon.
