Plot Summary
Miss Applegate is leaving Atlanta to be married in New York, and a robotic escort is meant to bring her safely to her betrothed. However once they arrive to New York, Miss Applegate is kidnapped by a group of racist white southerners who mean to sell her to a British Colonel. At the station where she is kidnapped, the escort meets Jimmy Stiles, a mechanic. Jimmy helps the escort repair himself after the kidnappers had damaged him, and helps him contact his master, George Washington Carver. Carver tells the escort to put different "wheels" inside himself (his wheels dictate his functions as a robot) so that he will be able to go save Miss Applegate. With new wheels installed, the escort has a new sense of emotion. The escort and Jimmy set off to find a man called Big Tom, a supposedly kind white southerner meant to help them. Big tom gets them into where Miss Applegate is being held, but then betrays them, intending to sell them out to the kidnappers to earn their favor. The escort kills Tom and dumps him in the garbage. Near the garbage, they find Moses, an enslaved man whose job it is to pick up trash. Moses helps them get inside the building where Miss Applegate is. Using the gun Tom had used against them, they escaped with Miss Applegate. The escort stayed being to distract the kidnappers, leading to him to be damaged. A month later the escort wakes up in Carver's repair facility, where Carver explained what happened to him. Jimmy and Miss Applegate ended up getting married since her betrothed had abandoned her. Moses and the other slaves being kept by the white southerners in the area were freed. Carver decides to promoted the escort to his lab assistant for being so useful in helping Miss Applegate. Instead of being called "escort," now the robot's name is Frederick George.
