Following the death of her beloved Uncle Luther, Zipper Hardwick moves to the small town of Oroville, Texas to run his antique shop. Zipper is eager to escape her dead-end bartending job and become a small-business owner. On her first day, a gruff man pays one hundred thousand dollars cash for a rickety armoire and dining set. Although Zipper is confused, she’s happy to have the money. Later, a neighboring store owner named Lefty stops by to welcome Zipper to the town. He’s an amputee who was friends with Luther. The next day, Zipper uses some of the money to buy groceries and cleaning supplies. She puts the rest in a safety deposit box at a large bank in the city. A few days later, the president of a small Oroville bank calls to inquire about why she hasn’t deposited the money in her uncle’s account. A suspicious Zipper closes the account and hangs up. The next day, the sheriff comes to the store and cryptically warns her that the business will get her into trouble. Finally, Zipper goes to Lefty for answers. He reveals that her uncle and her father were gang members who robbed a bank decades ago. Luther got away with a limp, but Zipper’s father paid with his life. Lefty was the getaway driver on the mission, which is how he lost his arm. The organization set Luther and Lefty up with “stores” so they could still be useful. Oroville’s economy runs on illegal money laundering, for which small businesses like theirs are a front. The next morning, two burly men demand that Zipper hand off the hundred grand. Zipper fears they’ll find out that she doesn't have the cash, and she flashes a gun to scare them off. Lefty hears the commotion from next door and barges in with a weapon of his own. Finally, the men leave. Then, Lefty and Zipper have drinks in her upstairs apartment. Just then, they hear the sheriff burst in downstairs. Lefty feels guilty for botching the getaway all those years ago, which led to the death of Zipper’s father. He tells her to sneak into his adjoining apartment through a hidden connecting passageway, take his stash of cash, and start a new life. Zipper obeys, hoping to finally escape from her family’s past.
