A sports announcer strikes up an unlikely friendship with Steve Sprissel, a once renowned baseball player nearing the end of his career, by playfully roasting him on the speakers as he goes up to bat. After the game, Sprissel invites the announcer over to his house to play cards with his buddies. Over time, this becomes a weekly tradition. While there, the announcer begins taking angry phone calls from Steve's mother, who is begging Steve to retire and return home to her and his daughters. Despite multiple injuries, Steve is too proud to quit. One day. Steve's mother and his daughters sneaks into the booth as the sports announcer is in the bathroom and publicly beg Steve to come home. He acquiesces, then proceeds to go out with a bang, ending his long career with a brilliant game.
