Plot Summary
A group of people on an expedition reach the cave of forgotten songs. Everyone besides the man is local to the area and have already entered the cave for one reason or another. There is a little disagreement on whether the group is going to enter or not. Jon, the unofficial leader, wants to go in and insists that nothing will happen. Stefan, who is the packhorse of the group and carries most of the supplies for the expedition, is against the excursion into the cave. Jon and Stefan spend a lot of their time arguing over everything with each other. Stefan is very well liked in the group despite his clumsy disposition. Jon has admitted in the past that he argues with Stefan to spite him. The two men seem rather close despite their constant bickering. Jon eventually leads the group into the cave. The entrance of the cave was littered with (??) The man has no idea what to expect. They reach a cavern and Jon mentions that usually people stop here, but they are going to go a little further. An otherworldly sight waits for them. They see spirits shaped like people huddled together and drifting about. The man notes the unusual appearance of the spirits. They specifically observe a particular spirit that was approaching them. While the spirit had no facial features, it did possess an orb in its head that flickers like a lantern. As it approaches, the man is surprised by its size and begins to hear the forgotten song. The rest of the group also hear it and show various reactions. The song sounded like various gongs. The large spirit moves through the group, which had parted to allow its passage. The narrator is struck by how small and young the group was compared to the spirit and wonders how many forgotten songs exist here. Suddenly, Stefan begins to move deeper into the cave. The rest of the group is alarmed and moves to stop him. Stefan’s reversal of attitude is seen as evidence of the dangers of the forgotten songs. The group ultimately acquiesce to Stefan and tie a rope around him in case something happens. As the rope unravels faster, Jon becomes increasingly uneasy. The group realizes Stefan is not returning for one reason for another. The rope completely unspools and Jon grabs the end and is dragged along the cave floor. The rest of the group spring to action to help. The people heaving against Stefan drop in exhaustion one by one, leaving the smallest, Jon, as the last one standing. He heaves and pulls Stefan into sight. Stefan is unwilling to leave so the group works together to move him out of the cave. At this point, the group is being swarmed by numerous spirits, and are feeling emotions that they had never felt before. They manage to get out the cave safely, but as they do, they are filled with an empty feeling. They sing a song they all know as they continue their journey.
