Plot Summary
Once she hears that her father Leon seems to be having mental troubles, Clara, a powerful psychoanalyst just like him, drops everything to help him rearrange himself in a retirement home, at his own request. When they move him in, Leon is not completely satisfied, but accepts that he must adjust. However, he immediately forms a dislike and antagonism for the institute's director, Mr. Hoffman, which brings strife to his experiences there, or so Clara hears. Clara begins to get used to her father's condition, not taking it seriously to the extent that she begins discussing and referencing it openly to anyone, although she feels guilty once she realizes what she is doing. As the feedback she gets from the institute staff increases in negativity, she begins to worry somewhat, but is still confident in her father. She decides to take Leon out to a picnic, but Hoffman is directly against the idea when she pitches it to him. He describes the difficulties the staff have had with Leon, and Clara believes him somewhat, but persists in her desire to take her father out, and he eventually agrees. While Clara and Leon drive to the picnic location, Leon startles Clara by calling her "Fidelia," a name she does not recognize whatsoever, and he does not explain the name when she asks about it. When they arrive, Clara sets up the picnic supplies, and notices her father is acting strange, which makes her nervous. In their conversation, Leon gives increasingly hurtful responses to Clara's statements, and starts to back away from her, until he hides form her completely. Then, they play a warped, forced version of hide-and-seek, as Leon attempts to trick Clara and slip out of her grasp, until she becomes so desperate to catch him that she accidentally falls and cuts her leg. After that, Clara tricks Leon into approaching her by acting exhausted, which allows her to pin him and work him back into their car. They return to the institute, where Clara decides to help her father to bed before leaving. Upon doing so, Leon refuses to prepare for bed, instead insisting that he will "be on TV," indicating that he believes his mirror to be a screen. Clara, no longer able to hide from the true state of her father, complies with his wishes sadly.
