Plot Summary
On the planet Ariel, Anna lives in the small house that she used to occupy with her ex-husband, Piotr. One day, Anna's neighbors–Katya, Javier, and Sara–whom Anna used to be close friends with but has since grown apart from, knock on her door, asking if they can stay in her house. Records had been released in Ariel, revealing the names of those that had undergone genetic engineering. Due to their previous operations, Anna and her neighbors were at risk of being hurt and taken away by rioting masses that were out on the streets, persecuting genetically modified individuals. Anna had moved to Ariel to receive an operation and start a new life with her husband, Piotr. Piotr had always wanted to become a glider–a human being with lighter bones and webbed appendages that can fly on his own–but Anna, formerly named Matthew, wanted to transition so that she could present in a female body. Upon moving to Ariel, Anna and Piotr became close friends with their neighbors, Katya and Javier, a couple, and their young daughter, Sara. Anna confessed to Katya that she wanted to have a child–something that doctors admitted would be difficult but not impossible. After suffering a miscarriage, Katya helped Anna by confessing that the same had happened to her. However, Anna continued to suffer four more miscarriages before releasing that her dream of becoming a mother would never come to fruition. In her misery, Anna pushed Piotr, Katya, and Javier away, until she was left without a husband and friends, completely alone. Years later, Katya reaches out to Anna for the first time during this dangerous situation. Anna reluctantly allows Katya and her family to stay the night; they promise that they will flee to another place the following day. Unfortunately, at dawn, the rioters knock on Anna's door. She fears that she will be caught for having undergone an operation to have a "female" body; however, the rioters only have flight records, and thus only pursue gliders. Anna goes through their inspection scot-free, but the rioters suspect that she may be harboring her glider neighbors. Before Anna can say anything, Katya and Javier allow themselves to be taken away, leaving Sara in Anna's bedroom. The couple departs and Anna is left to mother Sara, a cruel twist of fate for her former friends, but a realization of Anna's deepest dream.
