Plot Summary
Ellie is a child from the regular world who discovers that her closet door transports her to a magical world. In this magical world, she meets and befriends an inhabitant of that world, Zera. One day, Ellie finds that her closet door is broken and no longer transports her to the magical alternate universe. For years, she writes letters to the "Gatekeeper" (the entity that guards the doors between worlds), trying to return to the magical world all while dealing with the challenges of growing up. Though years have passed for Ellie, a much shorter time span has passed for Zera, who journeys through the lands of the magical world, trying to find a way to stop the curse that has locked all the doors to the regular world. She travels to the Forgotten Book, who has lost hope that humans remember or care about the magical world and its inhabitants. Now in high school, Ellie builds a door to the magical world for herself. She brings her girlfriend and her mother with her—as they too used to journey to the magical world—and she and Zera are reunited. Seeing that humans care about the magical world, the Forgotten Book removes the curse and Ellie and Zera embark on a journey to fix all the other magical doors.
