Plot Summary
A French lesson called La Muerte begins. It is focusing on farm life. The lesson instructor begins by highlighting the animals and different terms in French. They introduce definite articles, le, las, and les. They give examples of the articles and various phrases.
They continue to describe the farm using French vocabulary terms. They explain that there are animals on the farm next to weather-worn buildings. They describe the chickens which do not like the farmer or the cats. They describe the chickens are the farmer’s children’s pets until the farmer beheads them. The wife of the farmer spends time with a knife in the kitchen preparing the food for the family to eat.
The instructor spends time describing the history of the French language. They talk about having many words for the same thing in English and how that is not true in French. They explain that words in French are often too general. They give an example of _arbre _which is often incorrectly used to describe most trees. They continue talking about images behind words.
They say farm is the best place to start when learning a language. The farm comes before words for the city. The instructor describes a scene from the farm one winter evening. They say that if you are in the field, hearing the cows, you can see a light on in the barn. The woman of the farm is visible in the window of the kitchen. She seems anxious. She is cooking. She can see the hired man holding a small object in his hand in the archway of the barn. The woman wonders why he is standing there.
The instructor continues the lesson on pronunciation and on articles. They describes feminine words which seem feminine. The instructor returns to the farm scene where the hired help lets the cows out and closes the door. But where is the farmer? The instructor describes that the chopping block is covered in something even though the farmer has not killed an animal in days.
The instructor reiterates the importance of definite and indefinite articles. They describes different terms for different aged chickens. The instructor describes that when the lady of the farm goes to get the eggs of that chicken, she will freeze as she sees something that does not belong among the eggs.
The instructor continues the grammar portion of the lesson, noting the importance of context in language. They say that the learner should be able to form a simple sentence by the end of the lesson. They introduce a new word. They ask if the learner remembers the woman of the farm and what she was doing. They say that the learner should be able to form a few sentences, like the woman is in the kitchen and the cows are in the barn. They end by asking where the farmer is.
There is a vocabulary list on the last page. The final word is La Muerte which means murder.
