Plot Summary
J'Ouvert, the first morning of Carnival begins around four o'clock. As a woman gets ready with her band, she sees a handsome white man who dances nearby. He is a little off-beat, but he dances better than most tourists. When the woman notices that he is looking at her, she takes an interest in him, since she considers herself ordinary and would expect a man like this to be interested in someone prettier. They make eye contact and the woman notices his deep black eyes. She goes over to dance with him. She shows him how to dance in rhythm, and then they make their way through the streets of Port of Spain. The woman has a flask of rum that she drinks from, and she eventually gets drunk. At one point, she notices a jewel in the man's chest. It strikes her as a little odd, but she knows that piercings have gotten popular lately. When she touches the jewel, however, she gets an electric shock that makes her see darkness and stars until the man removes her hand from it. They continue down the streets. The woman pauses to relieve herself in a gutter. They go up onto a big stage, where one of the woman's friends checks to see if she is alright. She says she is, and then meets up with the white man again. As the festivities start to die down, the woman finds a place to rest on the grass. The man lays next to her. As she is about to fall asleep, he takes her hand and puts it on his jewel again. When the woman wakes up, she is in a strange metal room. Someone bathes her and puts her in a cassock. She sees another person there, a different person who wears a similar garment. The woman tells this person the story of how she got there and tries to figure out what's happening.
