Plot Summary
Cora waitresses at Sunrise Restaurant in a tiny Canadian town populated exclusively by Dene and Inuit tribespeople. She's quarreling with her boss and occasional lover, Johnny Red, when they receive news that an unexpected visitor has arrived. A trucker crashed just beyond the town's borders, and with a fearsome blizzard inbound, he'll be trapped with them for at least a week. She brings the trucker, Aidan, and the town's makeshift crew of first responders Johnny's signature stew. When Aidan opens his eyes, though, Cora immediately knows what's wrong. Her suspicions are confirmed when she leaves the trucker's motel room and discovers Raven perched in the midst of the fearsome snowstorm, the Inuit trickster god of secrets and warnings. Within a few days, the rest of the townspeople begin to notice as well. They ask Aidan to attend Tropical Night at Sunrise Restaurant, a makeshift celebration primarily thrown to eat the bizarre tropical fruits Aidan was transporting before they spoil. In the midst of the festivities, Raven appears once more, carrying a small object. Aidan shrieks and runs into the blizzard, leaving Cora to discover what Raven brought them - a woman's severed finger. The townspeople discover the rest of her body shortly. Gertie's remains have been desecrated, and many of the Inuit know why - Aidan has a Wendigo's eyes. He's possessed by a violent, hungry spirit that has led many townspeople to ruin and murder before, and there's only one way to stop him from killing everyone else - shoot him down. Cora refuses to abide by Aidan's murder, certain it will bring scrutiny upon the town from white outsiders who won't understand why he needed to be killed. She devises an alternative plan - because Aidan is white, she can use pomegranate seeds to bind him to the town for six months of the year, just like Eve and Persephone were bound. She's taking a break at the restaurant when Aidan attacks her, hitting her in the back of the head and sinking his teeth into her hand. Cora shoves the pomegranate into his mouth, and the Wendigo leaves him - just as the townspeople come to her rescue. Cora wakes to discover Johnny Red, distraught, at her side. He kisses her and promises he'll ensure she's never hurt again. Aidan enters and thanks Cora for banishing the Wendigo, but she's not entirely sure she did.
