Plot Summary
Ange is the single mother struggling with multiple, Herculean trials at once: looking for her deadbeat baby daddy, Teo; working her job at a history library; and caring for herself and her daughter, Lily. On top of all of this, Ange’s anxiety about climate change has skyrocketed, following a creek-cleaning trip she had gone on with Lily. Sifting through the trash, Ange found the decomposed corpses of ducks in the water, bringing on a wave of nausea and vomit. That night, she can’t sleep, so she drinks in an attempt to alleviate her insomnia and anxiety. Upon returning to her job, Ange is notably off, with her boss and friend, Phyllis, commenting on her appearance. Phyllis has been bringing Ange lunch for a long time now, worried that she’s lost the ability to care for herself. The two following nights, Ange goes on sleepless, drinking away. On the third night, she enlists the help of a psychiatrist friend to acquire sleeping aids, but still, to no avail. Instead, she drinks herself into a stupor and continues looking for Teo, emailing him. Ever since a hurricane hit his hometown in Puerto Rico, she had lost all communication with him, though she believes he is still alive. The following day at work, Ange is stopped by Phyllis when it is revealed that a write-up Ange produced for a professor on a cult had been entirely fabricated. When she tried to find the document she based her information off of, it was nowhere to be found; thus, Phyllis drives her home, begging her to take care of herself and only return to work when she is well, lest Phyllis be forced to fire her. Phyllis feeds Lily chicken sandwiches, which makes Ange sick anew, reminding her of the ducks. Drinking heavily, Ange escapes into the cool night of Boca Raton, looking to free herself of her responsibilities as Teo had done. Walking to the beach, Ange is returned only to the same nightmare she has been running from when she finds yet more trash, glass, and plastic littering the coast.
