Plot Summary
Stan is awake late at night watching TV when he realizes that the moon is incredibly bright that night. When he starts to connect the dots about why the moon would be so bright, he realizes that the sun had exploded and he and the rest of California had limited time to live. So he calls a love interest, Leslie and invites her out for hot fudge sundaes. They chat, eat sundaes, and Stan smokes despite having successfully quit months ago. He doesn't tell Leslie about what he thinks will happen. As they are leaving the diner, someone begins shouting about the end times. They go to a bar and drink, then walk outside trying to decide where to go next. It's then that Leslie reveals that she does know what's going on, that when Stan had woken her up she noticed the moon and looked through he telescope, noticing the other planets were also strangely bright because of the sun gone supernova. They then start planning their last day on earth, buying excess wine, cheese, and other foods, looking in jewelry stores at expensive things. But the weather turns bad earlier than they expect with hail like rocks and an incredible amount of rain for Los Angeles. They go back to Leslie's apartment where they begin considering survival through whatever is to come. They make food, save things, and ration. As Leslie's apartment floods and windows bust from the rain and wind, Stan wonders if future generations will survive as well.
