Plot Summary
Barbara, a young girl, receives an invitation to a "cutting-out" party with TheOtherGirls. During these parties, the girl being inducted must choose two of her pet pony's three special features (wings, horn, and voice) to carve out with a knife. After Barbara and her pony, Sunny, read the invitation, Sunny expresses to Barbara how excited she is to make new friends. She proceeds to explain that she would prefer to keep her voice; Barbara can cut off her wings and horn. The party is at the TopGirl's house. TopGirl greets Barbara and Sunny at the fence, and remarks that Sunny is not as pretty as her own pony, Starblossom. Barbara stands up for Sunny, but not without complimenting Starblossom in her eagerness to obtain the other girls' approval. Barbara and Sunny follow TopGirl to the dock, where girls are listen to music from an iPod plugged into speakers, play Wii tennis, and drink Coke Zero, diet Red Bull, and diet lemonade. They gather around Barbara and Sunny in anticipation of the cutting-out ceremony. Barbara feels sick. She cuts off Sunny's wings, and is surprised by how easy it is, then throws up. She also cuts off Sunny's horn, and Sunny drops to her knees in pain. Barbara falls down beside her and cries. TopGirl instructs Barbara to cut out Sunny's voice. Barbara protests, and sobs that they only said to cut off two of the tree. TopGirl explains that the cutting-out just makes Barbara OneofUs. But if Sunny also wants to be friends with the other ponies, she has to give up her voice. Barbara and Sunny suddenly realize that none of the other ponies can talk, and that they all have scars on their necks. Barbara yells that she won't to do it, but deep down, she knows she has to. She is about to lift the knife to Sunny's neck when Sunny abruptly refuses. She spins and runs for the fence, but without her wings and horn, she cannot fly over it or fend off the other ponies, who chase after her. The other ponies pull Sunny down and trample her to death. The other girls immediately go to the family room to start up a game. Barbara stumbles in after them, but FirstGirl explains that Barbara cannot play with them, because she doesn't have a pony.
