Plot Summary
Everybody, to some extent, can pick up memories or feelings when they feel objects, and some people have a better ability than others. Gui is rare in that he cannot access memories or emotions when he touches objects, thus he becomes a "cleaner." Cleaners like him are necessary to remove memory deposits so that people don’t have to relive painful memories. One day, a woman named Beatrice comes to his shop asking for her apartment to be cleaned. He initially declines, as usually only murderers ask for their apartment to be cleaned. Gui eventually is convinced she isn't a killer and accepts the offer. She asks him if he can handle it emotionally and is surprised to hear of his condition. Beatrice then has lunch with her sister Clara and reveals why she wants the apartment cleaned. Her boyfriend Lucas disappeared, and she wants to erase all memory of him. Beatrice then declares that she hates her ability as her power is so strong that she can gather history from the object. Due to Beatrice’s ability, she is destined for a promising career as her abilities are in strong demand. Clara doesn’t understand why Beatrice hates her powers. Clara’s powers are average and she is jealous of Beatrice's opportunities. However, she does admit that Beatrice has had difficulty controlling her power as she recalls how Beatrice as a child, couldn’t touch her blanket because the memories were highly traumatizing. Clara had to clean the blanket until all of the memory had disappeared. After the lunch, Beatrice returns to her apartment. Gui has cleaned some objects, and Beatrice is horrified when she can’t recall memories. Beatrice goes to Gui’s shop and tells him to stop cleaning the rest of her objects. Gui agrees and when she leaves Gui reminisces on his lack of ability. It’s perfect for his line of work, but when he touches a scrubbing brush that his deceased father once owned, he is saddened to be unable to access the memories.
