Plot Summary
The Singularity, an epidemic of human consciousness being uploaded to computers begins to sweep the planet. This upload leaves behind a lifeless body, but the consciousness can still interact with the physical world by way of email, computers, etc. A man details his experience with the Singularity through flashbacks and present day descriptions. As millions of people upload their consciousness, the tangible Earth loses its doctors, teachers, and many other necessities due to lack of population. As the virtual world progresses, the physical world begins to technologically decline. His mother, a Catholic who was strictly against the Singularity, became sick and began to lose her bearings. As she began to die a slow death, the man’s father made the decision to upload her consciousness against her wishes. The two parents joined the “dead”, the group of people who chose to upload. The man is sickened by this, especially knowing that his mother wished to die an “authentic” death since she led an authentic life. Later, the man’s sister, Laura, also chooses to upload her consciousness because she has lost faith in the barren physical society. This strikes as a betrayal to the man. In present day, the man and his wife snoop on their daughter, Lucy, to make sure she isn’t losing her way and falling for the propaganda of the Dead. Lucy plans to attend prom with her friend Jack, making her own dress with the textile knowledge she’s gained from scavenging supplies to survive. As Lucy and Jack leave for prom, they give an emotional goodbye, and are expected to return by 12am. The night gets later and later and the man feels like it’s past 12am, even though the clock only says 11pm. He checks his old watch buried in his drawer and realizes it’s 1am and someone has tampered with the clock. His wife Carol, admits to helping Lucy escape because even though they’ve made the decision to stay in this society, Lucy is just a child and should be able to experience something new. She says Laura is coming to help Lucy and Jack upload themselves. The man leaves frantically to stop them. When he arrives at the clearing in the woods where people upload, he finds Lucy. He realizes how much she looks like his mother and remembers how his mother had her choice taken from her. Lucy tells her father that the choice is hers, not his. The scene transitions to Carol meeting the man at the clearing and comforting him, assuming that Lucy his left.
