n the French shipyard, the shipyard foreman and a ship’s Colonel discuss their theories and understandings of the world. The French view the Italians as “Macaronis'' and make fun of the fact that Italians never change. The foreman is Italian and deals with the mixed feelings he has of his heritage by mocking the Italians and trying to become more like the French. He creates a deep hatred for the Italians while the Colonel recognizes the Italians as people (even if he dislikes their beliefs). The Colonel advocates for the Italian children to receive food, as he sees them starving and only the French children are allowed to eat. The story shifts to two Italian fighter pilots that die. They are given a funeral and the Colonel and the foreman both watch their bodies. The foreman watches the Italian flag by their bodies and calls them fascists.
