Plot Summary
Estrellita is waiting at the front door when Lila and her family get to Colombia. Lila's father was just granted a job at the local petrochemical plant, and they were living in a nice part of town. The family agrees to hire Estrellita, even though Estrellita limped and they didn't need a maid. One day, Estrellita invites Lila to go to the balcony with her. There, they spy on Isis, the daughter in the family that owns the plant. She's naked, and her hand makes its way between her legs. Lila turns away. She then asks Estrellita if she's engaged, and Estrellita says yes, that's why she's working. She has to pay her future husband's family because he's marrying a disabled person, which Lila thinks is unfair. Recognizing her privilege, Lila decides she must save Estrellita.
At school the next day, Lila befriends Barbara. Barbara convinces Lila to attend church with her. After attending church and becoming saved, Lila becomes infatuated with the idea of God. At school one day, Lila discovers that the HOPE ship is coming to town soon. The HOPE ship comes from the U.S. and has a lot of American doctors and nurses on board. She prays that Estrellita will be able to get surgery, and she tells her parents this as well. Estrellita tells Lila that thanks to Lila's parents, she will be having surgery. Because she will no longer be disabled, she won't need to pay her future husband's family any longer.
On the day of the surgery, Lila prays and prays. That night, no one knows where to find Estrellita. Lila's mom calls her in to speak with her and tells Lila her father just got a new job. They'll be moving to Bogotá. Disappointed that she'll be missing Estrellita's wedding, she rushes to ask her father to stay. When she gets there, he tells her that there was an issue with Estrellita's surgery. They had to amputate her leg. Her parents said she can't visit her. And yet, Lila decides to go with Barabara and the church to visit. She couldn't live with herself just forgetting about Estrellita.
