Plot Summary
After her mother’s nervous breakdown, Devon spends her last summer before college with her mother at her grandmother’s house in Parrish Point, Maryland. Devon's father is on another tour in the army and rarely makes time for his family. Devon is sad to give up her time with her friends, especially Amy, who drunkenly kissed her at a party.
Devon's grandmother’s town is predominantly white, and Devon feels uncomfortable grocery shopping in her Black Lives Matter shirt. A white woman approaches her to compliment her hair. Just as she is about to touch it, a girl around Devon’s age calls her out for it. The girl introduces herself as Sarah, the woman’s sister. Her pixie cut and lip piercing immediately attract Devon, and they meet at the local library a week later. Devon goes to a party at Sarah’s house with mostly college students, and she is happy to hear people ask if they are dating. Just before Devon goes home, they share a kiss. Despite her father’s homophobia, Devon allows herself to enjoy the moment.
For the rest of the summer, Devon spends more time with Sarah and dreads having to end their relationship when she goes to college. She avoids her mother and grandmother’s questions about Sarah, but they seem to have a clue already. One day, her mother admits that she will be getting a divorce from Devon's father. Devon had expected this decision for a long time and believes her mother will be happier for it. Her mother also points out that Devon seems to be dating Sarah and encourages her to tell Sarah how she feels. As the summer comes to an end, Devon and Sarah decide to live in the moment and just let their relationship run its course freely.
