Plot Summary
Gloria, a young woman with a terminal brain tumor, decides to visit her friend Jean. After Gloria overhears a woman on her flight make a threat about the flight over the phone, Gloria's mortality glares. She begins to drink. Upon landing, she checks into a motel near a monastery. Gloria has been wanting to adopt a dog for a while, but when she arrives at the monastery, she is informed that they don't have any up for adoption. Instead, she buys cheesecake made by nuns and drives to Jean's house. When she arrives at Jean's ramshackle house, she meet Gwendal, Jean's 10-year-old daughter from her second marriage. Jean recently divorced her fourth husband. While Jean is outside, Gwendal asks Gloria to kidnap her so that they can write Gloria's biography together. Declining her offer, Gloria goes with Jean to Bill's house, her first ex-husband. After a strange visit with Bill, Gloria heads back to the motel but is awoken by a noise in the middle of the night. Terrified, she immediately jumps in her car and drives to Jean's house. A few moments after she arrives, Gwendal walks outside, suitcase in hand. Gloria and Gwendal start driving but stop at the monastery and steal one of the monk's dogs. With the dog in the backseat, they keep driving, stopping at a diner and then a gas station to buy some supplies. Gwendal, now equipped with paper and a pen, begins asking Gloria about her life. Gloria is hesitant to respond. That night, they stop at a motel, but when Gloria wakes up the next morning, Gwendal admits she let the dog loose and it ran away. They continue driving, and Gwendal continues to pester Gloria with questions. They arrive at another motel that afternoon, and while Gwendal is frustrated by Gloria's obstinance, Gloria is exasperated and exhausted by Gwendal's presence. Gloria leaves Gwendal alone in the motel room and takes a bath.
