Plot Summary
In the late 19th century, Charles "Will" Parker works with his brother as a private investigator in San Francisco. In his past, he worked as a successful gunman across the Wild West. He built up a reputation and was frequently challenged to duels, leaving many dead bodies in his wake. When he finally gave up gun work, he started using his middle name and laying low, working in detective and security work on the East Coast. Now, he works as a private investigator at Parker Investigations. Will is hired by a mysterious man named Cole Bennett to help him solve a mystery. Twenty-two years ago, outlaw Jesse Ford sought revenge for his brother's death at the hands of U.S. Marshal Sam Ewing. Jesse and two henchmen tried to kill Sam and his 11-year-old son Andrew, but Sam managed to fight off the men, killing both Jesse and one of his henchmen. The other henchman got away. Recently, Bennett's friend revealed on his deathbed that Jesse had been shot in the back. Bennett wants Will to figure out the truth about what really happened that day. He tells him that the sheriff, Sam Ewing, and Andrew Ewing have all since died, but Bennett suspects that Andrew's best friend was present on the day of Jesse's death. He thinks that Sam never mentioned the boy's presence because he wanted to protect him. Bennett also reveals that Jesse and Dalton were his wife's nephews, which is why he's interested in reopening the case. He asks Will to find Andrew's mysterious childhood friend and figure out the truth. Bennett also asks if Will is related to Charlie Parker, but Will lies to protect his true identity. Will arrives in the Ewings' hometown of Dodge. By asking around, he learns that Andrew Ewing was close friends with Daisy Truitt's son. Will visits the Truitt house but discovers that Daisy's son Wilson was kicked by a horse six months ago and cannot hear or speak. Unable to question him, Will is about to give up, when he learns that Daisy has another son, Tommy. The next day, Will rides into the town of Hopeful and tracks down Tommy Truitt. Tommy admits that he was there on the day of the shooting and hadn't told anyone about it. He recalls returning to the Ewing house with Andrew to discover that Jesse and his henchmen had attacked Sam. Jesse orders one of his men, Dixon, to shoot the boys, but Dixon refuses, which angers Jesse. They agree to lock Andrew and Tommy in the pantry instead. Jesse tells his men to wait outside while he kills Sam. They also overhear him tell Sam that he'll kill the boys and Dixon right afterwards. Unbeknownst to Tommy, Andrew retrieves his father's shotgun, which is hidden in the pantry. He shoots Jesse in the back, allowing Sam to pick up Jesse's gun, go outside, and kill one of Jesse's men. Sam decides to let Dixon leave unscathed since he refused to kill Andrew and Tommy. The three of them agree to tell the police that only Sam and Andrew were present and that Sam was the one who killed Jesse, just in case anyone tries to take revenge. Will meets with Bennett to tell him the whole story, and Bennett seems relieved to know that Sam didn't shoot Jesse in the back. Will then reveals that he knows Bennett is really Dixon. Bennett reveals that he is now an elected mayor back East, and he worries that his past as one of Jesse Ford's henchmen could come back to haunt him. Will assures him that his past with Jesse Ford doesn't matter because he's a changed man. They part ways. Will runs into a man who asks him if he is Charlie Parker, and Will tells him that he used to be.
