Plot Summary
In anticipation of her departure for northern New York, Patty is packing up her office at a rehab center in the city. Jack, the sober junkie she helped get a job at the center, is erratic, hitting her with question after irritating question, trying to get a rise out of her about her move. But, accustomed to his ways, Patty brushes his doubts about her move off and returns home to her partner and one-year-old daughter. At home, Patty is surrounded by boxes that her partner Charlotte has already packed and empty boxes that it is Patty's duty to pack. Confronted with the reality of moving, Patty considers Jack's comments more, and anxiety and resentment begin to bubble up in her. Suddenly, the move feels like something she's been cornered into, at the request of Charlotte, and Patty begins to feel suffocated by her perfect life. In the kitchen, her partner is cooking her a gourmet meal while she watches their baby, and within a few days, the two will be living a farmhouse fantasy. Still, prompted by Jack's poking, Patty fears the change on her horizon. In the following days, once Patty's office has been packed away, her coworkers throw her a going-away party, with a large present in the middle of the room and Jack's notable absence. After colloquialisms, Patty finds herself becoming increasingly anxious, with everyone asking about her plans for the future, and joking about retirement. When Jack finally arrives, they open the present to reveal a rocking chair, which only reinforces the retirement jokes, sending Patty into a mini-spiral, fearing her old age. Unexpectedly, Jack diffuses the tension by telling bad jokes and redirecting the energy at himself rather than at Patty. She relaxes, thinking about how people move all the time, and she'll move whether she's ready or not.
