Plot Summary
Snow falls in Mississippi on a college campus in March because of climate change. Three different people try to find shelter, including Jeremiah, a mixed-race gay student who is contemplating whether or not her will vote to host a pride parade despite the fact that the local government has rejected their permit. Another member of the group is Anna, who believes she failed her job interview at the university, and Rowan, another interviewee. Anna is a hydrogeologist who is frustrated by people's mediocre response to the climate crisis. She gets coffee and ends up meeting Rowan; he asks her how long the world has left before climate change destroys it. Part of the reason why she wants the job is so she can live close to her boyfriend--though the relationship is on the rocks. Rowan reveals that he interviewed for the job against her. The associate dean, during the interview, muttered that he didn't want to bring in a "climate zealot." Before he interviewed for the job, Rowan's brash and bold mother died. His research program lost funding because of the conservative nature of the presidential administration. He assumes he will not get the job, so he gets very drunk and wanders camp before running into Anna in the coffee shop. Anna and Rowan decide to make out out of a sense of nihilism. They go to the motel at which Jeremiah works as a student employee. Jeremiah tries to post a clearly sensual photo of himself on social media as a means of behaving more openly gay. He grew up Christian in the South and only recently came out. He remembers his coming out: he spontaneously kissed the leader of the campus pride alliance at a meeting, then ran away. When Rowan and Anna enter the motel and head into a room, Jeremiah intuits that they are having sex. Two other professors arrive and explain that they want to take Anna to a faculty dinner. Jeremiah has no clue how to tell them where Anna is. He tries to listen at the door of their room and hears them listening to environmental justice songs—the least sexy music on the planet. The two professors accidentally see Rowan and Anna in a state of undress. The four end up having dinner together in the motel. The professors discuss the maddening lack of response to climate change. Weed-laced Jolly Ranchers spice up the party. Jeremiah watches the party become more and more intense. One of the professors tells Jeremiah that he should have the pride parade downtown, which would be very dangerous. Jeremiah feels upset after hearing them spend so much time discussing climate change and the coming end of the world. He goes back home to an old sharecropper house, where he lives; this makes him feel hopeless because he knows of a distant uncle who was lynched and another relative who was the son of slaves. Decades ago, Johnny Cash finishes performing at the university. He is arrested and goes to the county jail. Now, Jeremiah tries to decide if breaking the law for the pride parade is worth it. In the future, Rowan will get the job after Anna turns it down and two of the others professors will get married. Anna makes a groundbreaking scientific discovery that could help with the climate. In the present, Anna wakes up under a desk after her night of debauchery with the other three professors. Jeremiah finds her. He reminds her that there is so much more to be done to fix the climate. Later, the pride alliance decides to march straight into town.
