A little boy wakes up one night to get water when he finds his father in the kitchen, alone, sitting in the dark. The boy asks what his father is doing; his father replies that he’s just thinking about nothing. The boy continues to wake up in the middle of the night, and he’ll find his father in the same spot, but his father won’t reveal why he’s there. The child cannot think of any reason why his father wouldn’t be able to sleep: yes, his relatives all died in Austria during World War II and they aren’t the richest of families, but his father is not the type to brood. The boy can’t get to the bottom of the mystery. He just keeps on stumbling into his father in the middle of the night to no avail.
