After her long-time boyfriend, Scout, overdoses on heroin, Annie drives them from their apartment in Chicago to a beach town in Oregon so that they can start a new, clean life. Meanwhile, Annie continues to second-guess her love for Scout, who is condescending and rude to her.
Back in Chicago, Scout had racked up lots of debt from dangerous people to satiate his heroin addiction. On the night before Annie drove them away, Scout insinuated that the debt could be settled if Annie just agreed to grant a sexual favor to his creditor. She angrily refused.
In their new life, Annie grows disillusioned with their relationship. When their new neighbor shows the couple his boat, she calls Scout out on his pontifications about setting sail one day. She says that he never will. At that moment, they both realize that Annie no longer loves him.
The next day, Scout disappears and the neighbor reports his missing boat. Wistful in his absence, Annie walks into the ocean, which she'd loved but Scout had hated, and enjoys the view.
