Plot Summary
Keller is climbing Mount Everest with his boss, Ronnie, who has already accomplished the ascent, and thus he chooses to attempt this ascent without an oxygen mask. As they ascend, they pass countless bodies near a ravine nicknamed the Rainbow Valley, identifiable by the neon rainbow created by the snowgear of fallen climbers at the bottom. Passing by a dying man, their group stops to inspect him but quickly realizes that he is already dead, despite his pleas for them to help. An unidentified woman says she will stay with him while the rest climb. Everyone makes their ascent, but Ronnie and Keller find themselves behind their group because of Ronnie's lack of oxygen and Keller's lack of experience. Consequently, a storm has begun to pick up when they're descending, impeding their journey. They come across the woman near the Rainbow Valley again, her face slick with blood as she tosses a body into the ravine. She introduces herself as Ferri, and despite the imminent threat she poses, both Keller and Ronnie are so far gone that it is difficult for either to process their emotions. Ferri explains that she has an aversion to killing, so she climbs Mount Everest yearly because so many people die on the trail that she can feed without killing. All three traveling together, Keller tries to lead Ronnie down but exhausts himself in the process. After struggling a bit farther, Keller cuts the line that tethered him to Ronnie and Ferri says she'll stay with him. Keller eventually makes it to safety, though he is badly frostbitten. Ferri catches up with him just before he leaves, saying that she'll see him next time because people like him always return. And Keller takes comfort in the fact that even when he dies on Mount Everest, at least he will not die alone like his younger brother did in the hospital. He takes comfort knowing that Ferri will stay with him.
